I'm pretty sure I saw it here but I can't find it anywhere! Someone had mentioned a museum that was a former residence with a large private art collection. I believe it also had a highly recommended cafe in it. From previous trip research I think it was north of Les Halles area. It kind of sounded like a similar experience of Spencer House in London. Anybody have any ideas? I'm going in a few weeks and am looking fore something to do solo for a couple of days while my sister tours a first timer around the usuals. Any other recommendations not mentioned in the usual guidebooks appreciated too. We may even head over to a guingette weather permitting for something different.
The Jacquemart Andre is the one you are looking for. Also check out the Nissim Camondo, also once a family mansion and now a small museum. I like to think Proust was often a guest there. It would have suited him.
That's it! Thanks Norma. I forgot about Nissim Camondo too. Looks equally interesting.
The Nissim Camondo is wonderful, and overlooks the Parc Monceau, which is definitely worth walking through if you're in the neighborhood. If you like Monet, the Marmottan is one of my favorite museums!
The Jacquemart Andre is currently running a special exhibition " Florence ; portraits at the court of the Medici " through January . Headed there this week !
Also , at the Orsay , " Splendor and Misery ; pictures of prostitution , 1850 - 1910 " received a splendid review recently in The New York Times . Runs through January as well .
I went to Paris in September and went to all three museums, the tearoom and the park, that were mentioned in your reponses. The Jacquemart-Andre and the tearoom, the Parc Moneau, the Nissim de Camondo, all three are a 2-3 block area and easy to see all three in one day, and the Marmottan Museum is also worth seeing. All I can say is go, go, go. They are all excellent museums, off the beaten path and wonderful and the tearoom had the best food and deserts!!! I loved it. I also enjoyed the park, which was really pretty. The Marmottan Museum is very nice and I have been there twice. You will not be disappointed in any of the above.
I also went to the Pere-Lachaise Cemetery which a lot of famous people are buried and walked around one afternoon. Went on a Monday when a lot of musuems are closed, but found it not at all crowded and enjoyed the walk about. Beautiful cemetery, worth going if museums are closed and you want to see something different.
If you want any other information, just PM. Have a great time. Best, Ann
Thanks everyone! It looks like they all sell advanced tickets. Is this necessary or can I just walk up and get in?
Just a note about the Nissim Camondo museum. I checked their website to verify their hours. We got there shortly after opening only to find out that the 1st Floor (upstairs - 2nd floor US) wouldn't be open until 1:00. No reason given, but thought that maybe they were having a private tour. We were able to visit the ground floor (kitchen and servant's dining room) at a reduced fee, but since we had other things planned for the day, were unable to stay to see the main part of the museum. Since it was quite a distance for us to come, we were disappointed, but had a nice lunch in the neighborhood and walked through Parc Monceau, so not a total loss. It would be a good idea to give them a call to check their hours before going.
As far as advanced tickets, they are not necessary. Just walk up.
In addition to the places mentioned, I recommend the flea market at Porte de Vanve. I'm not a flea market person but I really enjoyed this one. It's small and had great stuff.
Have you been to, or spent nuch time in the Luxembourg Gardens? I can spend an entire day there.. love it.
There's also the Parc de Bagatelle in the Bois de Boulogne.. wonderful park.
I agree that the Bagatalle is an absolutely wonderful garden in season. However, with the OP headed to Paris "in a few weeks," I'm not sure that it will be showing its best in November/December!
Those two museums are definitely in my top list. Especially the little café at Jacquemart-André. I remember having a poulet a la crème and a tarte that was essentially a huge pistachio macaron. I'm salivating.
Kim, I think the Parc de Bagatelle would still be enjoyable this time of year.. it has so much more than flowers. We were last there in June, and the only flowers in the entire park I can remember seeing were the roses in the rose garden.
Interesting Susan, I honestly never would have thought of going there at this time of year. Will have to go check it out!
Just a note that the Nissim Camondo is covered by the Museum Pass and the Jacquemart-André is not. So if you have a pass, be sure to see the Nissim Camondo on a covered day, and save the Jacquemart-André for a day when you are not using the pass.
Thanks everyone! This is my third time going in November. Not ideal as other trips but there's no bad time for Paris. I'll agree with Susan on the parks even in the gloom. No crowds. But a lot of green in my experience. I might visit the Promenade Planté this trip if I can. Love Luxumborg gardens! Oddly, never been to Bagatelle. Never do museum passes usually but we have a first timer with us so considering it so thanks for the info! Looking forward to trying out the café!
