Need help choosing between these hotels in the 5th?

Hi. My husband and I are headed to France in June & finalizing our hotel stays. We want to stay in the 5th and have found several hotels, but can't decide on which one would be the best for us. We'd like to be near cafes, markets (to buy picnic items), and public transportation. We tend to spend less on lodging so we can use our money for other things. That being said, a clean hotel is important :)

Here are the 4 places I've narrowed the list down to. Lots of looking at reviews from TA, Booking and other online sites- they all sound good, but wondering if anyone has ever stayed at any of them? Thanks.

Familia Hotel 11 rue d Ecoles- People rave about the staff here

Hotel les Degres De Notre Dame 10 rue de Grands - have read that there's a new owner and it's not the same atmosphere as it used to be

Hotel Cluny Sorbonne 8 rue Victor Cousin

Hotel Esmeralda 4 rue Saint Juliene Le Pauvere

My 1st choice would be the Familia Hotel as it received good review on The Telegraph, and I really like their travel section. Second choice would be the Hotel Cluny for their reviews on Trip Advisor.

Have not stayed at any, but know the area well. I agree that Familia sounds best, then Cluny, however be aware of noise on Rue des Ecoles. If your room does not have A/C and you are on the street then an open window can mean lots of traffic noise.

Hello. We stayed at Hotel les Degres De Notre Dame in 2010. I had done tons of research. The location of the hotel was great. I believe we were on the third floor. The rooms were very shabby chic, more towards the shabby even then. I remember there was no closet, but a bureau and a weird bathroom. And very narrow stairs. The best part of the hotel was the complimentary breakfast every morning. There were fresh croissants, cheese, yogurt etc and you were served. Also one night we were tired so we ate at the restaurant and it was very good. But I had previously read that the restaurant was closed and there were new owners. The recent reviews don't look that good. My advice is if I was going back to Paris, is stay in that area but somewhere nicer. When we went the hotel was around 150 ranking on trip adviser. Now it's 1305.

Shaun,

I've not stayed at any of the hotels on your list but you may want to consider Hotel Diana.
It's in the Latin Quarter, reasonably priced, great location, family run, friendly staff available 24/7, good A/C and Wi-Fi. It also has an elevator. There are various bus stops & Metro stop near by, as well as a market, restaurants & bakeries.

My daughter & stayed there this past June and we'd definitely stay there again.

Enjoy Paris!

Hotel Esmerelda has been remodeled since I last stayed there, but is still a bare-bones operation. If all you care about is the view overlooking Notre Dame - and you have to ask for this specific room - you might be happy here. Otherwise, I'd choose another hotel.

The Cluny Sorbonne is in a good central location, you can walk to many of the things people want to see and the neighborhood is full of shopping and cafes, etc.

Thanks to everyone for your quick responses. Hotel Diana is already booked, so that's not a possibility.

We are leaning towards the Familia Hotel, but still considering the Cluny. Thanks again.

I stayed in La Familia twice last year and have rebooked for end of June. The staff is very helpful, location close to public transportation, and short walk to Seine/Notre Dame. My hotel room was clean and tidy. A couple things to consider... The hotel is on a busy street, so expect constant noise(closed windows do block street noise), the elevator is tiny and does break on occasion.
The Minereve Hotel next door is owned by the same family and is rated 3 star.

Thanks for the information. It has to be a great hotel if you've stayed there in the past several times and are going back again this year. We have decided to stay at the Familia and are looking forward to our time in Paris. We understand the noise factor, but want to be in a good location and it sounds like it's a convenient spot for many things.

Thanks again to everyone for your helpful input!

Shaun,

I'm really surprised that they would be booked so early. Did you try calling the hotel directly?
We stayed there this past June, and I tried to make reservations 6 months out, but was advised to wait till end of February.
