planning provence trip end of Sept.
Renting car at TGV Avignon, staying in St. Remy 4 nights, staying in Avignon the last night before catching train
back to Paris. Need 3 nights somewhere else? We have never been to this area before. Someone suggested Cassis
I think it is too far out of the way. Any suggestions from you Provence experts??
Not an expert but we were in Provence earlier this year and we did return our car to TGV Avignon. We spent 5 nights in St. Remy but first spent 5 nights in Arles. It's a great small town and was a good base to visit the Camargue; Pont du Gard and Uzes; Avignon (we returned our car early AM so had no time to visit on that day) and Nimes. St. Remy is more of a village while Arles is a small town with some great Roman ruins and a beautiful Roman arena. While St. Remy and Arles are close in distance they have a different atmosphere which we enjoyed.
We were perfectly happy spending 7 nights in St. Remy. There is so much to see and do in the area.
If you are itching for a change of venue, you might find a town in the Luberon and divide up your sightseeing north-south.
Unless your train is very early, no need to spend a night in Avignon unless you want to.
Thanks much, any information at all helps so much when you have not visited the area.
We are renting a car for the first time in Europe. Everyone says "you can do it" so we will see.
Going the end of September to Paris and TGV down .
Thanks again for your input
If you do stay 7 nights in the same place, and those nights run Sunday to Saturday, you might find a rental that suits. This gives you more space and a kitchen, potentially for less.
Hotel Calendal in Arles.
Many apartment rentals don't require a one week stay. We are renting an apartment in St. Remy for 3 nights in October. We are staying here - https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/1648077?s=VSGo.
I've stayed in Arles, at Hotel Regence, and enjoyed it. Personally I would stay in one place and day trip from there. It certainly wouldn't be worth changing from St. Remy to Arles, as they are not very far apart.

Thanks for the airbnb link. I think I will check it out.
Have never used them but read a lot of good things . It is great having a small kitchen
and lots of space. We American's are spoiled! Thanks again
The market takes place just outside that St. Remy apartment on Wednesdays. Someone posted about an apartment in St. Remy not long ago, and I thought by her description that it sounded like the place we had booked. In a PM she confirmed that it was in fact the same place. She gave me some really good information about the apartment and the location. If you do book it I am happy to share the information with you.
Andrea
I tried to book it and it was booked for our dates. Sad!
thanks anyway. We are staying 4 nights in St. Remy and 3 in L'isle su la Sourge in an apartment .
This should be an adventure . We are in our late 60's and renting a car for the first time! Yikes!
We usually hire a private guide and driver, but after reading a lot of forum posts, we doing it on our own.
Thanks again,
Barbara
You will have a wonderful time!
Sorry to hear the apartment wasn't available. Driving in Provence isn't hard. Get the smallest car you can comfortably fit in, to more easily navigate narrow roads and small parking spaces. I recommend taking a GPS and paper map. Enjoy yourselves!
If you want to spend a couple of nights in Cassis for a beautiful coastal experience, then direct driving time from St. Remy is about 1.5 hours per www.viamichelin.com. If your train ticket is not already booked, then you could book Marseille-Paris instead of from Avignon.
Thanks Laura but we are all set on our itinerary as far as reservations for lodging . We decided not to stay in Cassis, but up near St. Remy instead.
Appreciate your response.
