Navigo card?

I've never used a Navigo but an upcoming trip of parts of 5 days Tue-Sun make it look good. Do I need actual passport photos or is a photocopy enough? Any particular size? The RATP website says I can purchase them at a ticket machine. Do I need to first arrange some sort of cover including the photo at a window or is it self assembly? Any down sides?

Thanks. I've used carnets previously.

I think you need an actual passport sized photo. When I got one 5 years ago that was all I needed. They provided the rest. I think it was self assembly.

Nigel, you can make a photo copy (on regular paper) of your passport, and reduce it to the right size. They're not picky. I had two different sizes cut down, and she picked one and popped it in for me. Then on later visits you can just recharge it.

Some of the larger metro stations have photo booths where you can do an old-fashioned selfie.

My wife and I took each others pictures against a blank background with a digital camera. I adjusted the image with the zoom function until I got the requisite 1" by 1.25" size, printed them on an inkjet printer, trimmed them down with a pair of scissors and took them with us. Done in 5 minutes at the TGV train station at CDG.
