I'll be traveling to Paris for a week this August and will be there on August 15, 2019, The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a national holiday what can I expect to be closed? Are museums closed, monuments, churches any other tourist sites I should expect to not be open. I would just like to plan ahead if possible.
It's not really a national holiday, as it's a religious celebration. Some stuff will be closed, but most tourist sites will be open as it's the high tourist season - basically 95% of stuff that's open the rest of Ausgust will be open on the 15th, and the tourist sites may be busier.
Churches rarely close for an entire day. Go to the website of the place you are planning to visit on that day and it will list the days of the year when it is closed. Most usually on Xmas Day and New Years Day or May 1.
There are a lot of religious holidays in France, Museums are not closed on any of them nor are most other things and of course churches are not closed on religious holidays. If you look at the web sites of most major tourist attractions, you will find they are closed only on Jan 1, May 1 and Dec 25. There are a few also open on those days. Otherwise they just close on their normal closure day each week.
It is a national holiday in the sense that banks, offices, post offices etc are closed. The same as Presidents Day or Columbus Day or whatever in the States.
If there are any specific places you want to visit you'll need to check their website to be sure of their opening/closing plans. Janet is right that 99% of the places only close Jan 1, May 1, and Dec 25, but it doesn’t take long to check a site's website to be sure so you don’t have any unpleasant surprises.
Thank you everyone, for your responses, Looking forward to our visit.
