Nantes?

Hi all:

Has anyone been to Nantes? Traveling with my friend and 4 preteen/teen boys this summer and looking for a home exchange and have a possible hit in Nantes. Looks like some neat stuff there - day trip ideas? Is it easy to get out of there by public transport? Anything around that's good, especially active things boys would like? Looked and Rick doesn't have a section for it...

Thanks!

I was just about to ask for some advice about this myself ! we will be spending a day and a night in Nantes also. From my own research the Cathedral, Chateau des Ducs, port St. Pierre, Les bords de L'Erdre, boulevard de Launay all look interesting. Can anyone recommend a place to stay in or near the old town ? any other places that we must see ?

Thanks,
BT

Didn’t visit Nantes yet, so this doesn’t help you much, but Les Machines de l’Îsle interesting for young and old is what I certainly want to see. Especially the giant "Walking Elephant" is amazing. If of interest Musée Jules Verne is I think worth checking out.

You could easily spend 1 or 2 days wandering right in Nantes, and a few days around, in the countryside or on the coastline. It is quite easy to use public transport and reach interesting places within 1 hour. In addition to what was suggested in Nantes (+cultural events in summer, both for adults and children : a journey to Nantes, "Voyage à Nantes"), you could consider Clisson, Guérande, Le Croisic, Pornic, La Baule... You may find some information about how to get to Nantes and around, what to see, events, on http://visite.bretagne.free.fr/index.php/en/cities/nantes.html

I spent an afternoon in Nantes a few years ago, and thought it would be a worthwhile place to spend more time. Unfortunately, it was pouring. There was a really nice botanical garden in the center of town, and the huge, impressive chateau palace of the Dukes of Brittany. I took a train from Ancenis down (up?) the Loire, which was fast with frequent trains.
