Does anyone have any info about WW2 sites around Nancy and Metz and the surrounding area. From my fathers letters home I know he fought in some battles in this area and I would love to visit some sites around there. I am even interested in historical markers, signs or anything else denoting the conflict there. thank you
Hi,
I would suggest for Lorraine the town of Bruyeres liberated by the famous outfit, the 442 RCT, the Japanese-American unit. You'll see historical reference markers ,ie, memorials, etc in the town.
This is great info. thank you. the Lorraine book looks particularly worthwhile. Know where i can buy it? I will check on Amazon. thanks again
My father helped liberate Nancy, Sept, 1944 in a ten day long battle against the German army.. He and his fellow US Army soldiers were given a copy of a plaque mounted in Nancy commemorating the battle and the US Army’s victory there. When we arrived in Nancy we went to the Tourist office to ask where the plaque was located. No one spoke English but finally someone told us to walk in the opposite direction, to the other side of the large plaza and beyond to an “American memorial.” It began pouring rain but we kept walking. Finally we arrive at a memorial plaque commemorating Lafayette and his participation in the Revolutionary War. Wrong war, wrong country. If we ever return to Nancy, I will bring a photo of my father’s plaque as I am determined to find the original.
I always read comment the Lorraine Cemetery in St. Avold. Largest US.cemetery for WWIi dead in Europe. You can see pictures on the web.
