We can't be much help since we don't know anything about her. I suggest that she buy and read the appropriate guidebooks (the Rick Steves Paris guidebook is excellent). I would think if she actually cared much she would be the one posting this question.

Cynthia,
They write whole guide books about each of Paris, Spain and Italy. And this post is limited to 4000 characters! Where do I start?
I suggest you go down your library, second hand book shop or wherever and read some guide books to get some ideas.
Is this a pre-arranged tour, or is she doing her own transport, accommodation etc?
What sort of things is she interested in (art, museums, castles, scenery, history ???).
Where is she visiting in Spain and Italy? How much time in each place?

This forum is good at answering detailed questions (such as: "Do you recommended plane or train from Paris to Barcelona on a Sunday?"). Vague questions which need whole books to answer we are not so good at.

Has your friend asked you to make these enquiries for her daughter, and does the daughter know ? I was once a young daughter and I would have hated having my mother's friend having input into my trip.

If she is going with a school group I expect her itinerary will be pretty much set and she won't be able to go off on her own. Perhaps the school will be giving the kids suggestions on what to read and check out on the web before the trip.

My first trip to Europe was with our high school French club. The trip was to Paris ( I was a teacher at that school). I'm sure the trip organizer at her school will be giving everyone suggestions. There is one book I would suggest reading before she goes on her trip Europe 101. Also, Europe Through the Backdoor

Foods you need to try:
-La Bellevilloise

-Marche des Engants
-Chez Casimir
-Cafe de la Presse
-Catine Merci
(my personal favourites: in terms of reviews, pictures and location)
I am travelling to Paris this june and so these are the few restaurants that I have set my mind on trying! You should check them out! Just google! There will be plenty of articles on them!

Aside from the group probably having a set itinerary, your friend's daughter is plenty old enough to do her own research, and will learn a valuable lesson about how to travel by doing so. Send her to the library to check out travel guides for each country, and there are tons of online resources as well.

The kid should research such essentials as how to get, and how to hold, foreign currency, personal security in a big city, and using public transit away from the group. It's her trip so doing the research herself will give her an edge once she is on the ground. In Europe, someone her age is not, as I called her, a kid, but rather a young adult. She can act that way now by looking at the huge resources for attractions, starting with the destinations guide on this website, to help her better understand what her tour's guides will take her to (and what they might skip too.)

She may like Lonely Planet guidebooks and the Thorn Tree forum.
