My experience with Europcar in Paris CDG

Contract #2105512174 and reservation #1199888205 of April 2026
I am very unhappy the way I have been treated by this company. Here’s my story:
There was a line in front of me when I picked up the car in Paris CDG Terminal 2 on April 21 of this year. I was running late for my appointment and I told the agent I had purchased a separate insurance thru Discovercars.com, who I contracted with, so no need for extra insurance since my Visa credit card also covers for collision. I said the amount of 1,386.90 euros seems high from the original agreement and he said it’s because of the deposit that will be refunded when the car is returned. He said, sign here and here quickly etc and he made me sign for a 943.30 euros premium plus protection which I never agreed with. I am French living in the US and it was definitely not a language issue / misunderstanding. We spoke French to each other and I feel like I have been lied to and cheated. My total rental cost thru Discovercars.com was supposed to be $539.79 plus a full coverage insurance of $90.54 (which i had paid separately thru Discovercars.com) and they charged me an extra 943 euros for a premium plus insurance that I never asked for. Why would I have agreed to this insurance coverage when I was already covered?? It makes no sense. This is not fair. At this point, it’s my words against theirs since the agent made me sign that contract.
Once i returned to the US and received my bill, i complained to them but in vain…
I will never rent from them again (and i rent cars a lot). This is such a dishonest move on their part that i will tell my story over and over on their reviews.
STAY AWAY FROM EOROPCAR!!!!

Sorry you had a bad experience. But...

He said, sign here and here quickly etc and he made me sign for a 943.30 euros premium plus protection which I never agreed with

How exactly did he "make you" sign an agreement to pay for something you did not want?

It sounds to me like you simply didn't pay attention to what you were signing. Unfortunately, the rental car contract is (generally) a binding legal agreement, and if you sign on a line that says "I'll pay for this" then you are expected to pay for it. Doesn't matter how nice or rude the guy is at the rental counter.

While it's quite common to feel rushed and pressured to just quickly sign everything that's pointed to, you don't have to. You can (and should) take all the time you need to understand exactly what you are signing and what that's going to mean. And most of all, it's important to pay attention to details when signing contracts. Sure, a lot of people don't - especially when they're jet-lagged, tired, disoriented, and just want to get going. But that's your responsibility as the person paying to borrow someone else's expensive car.

I think the lessons here are: 1) always be clear about what you're signing for, what you're getting and what you're not; 2) don't get rushed or flustered into being sloppy and careless, don't just sign stuff blindly.

I completely agree with you. But this is the part that I felt the agent mislead me to sign: I said: “this amount here is way higher than what discovercars.com told me i was gonna pay” and he replied by saying that this was a deposit that will be reimbursed when the car will be returned. That’s what I call “dishonest”. I rent cars often and I will not get “tricked” like this ever again. They pretty much stole a thousand bucks from me!
Thank you for responding 👍

Since you already had coverage, you could have simply declined the extra insurance. Noting says you have to have any insurance other than the mandatory liability that is figured into the rental price. Since language wasn’t a factor, there shouldn’t have been a misunderstanding. It would be interesting to hear Europcar’s side of the story.

Of all the times I’ve rented in Europe, I’ve never been pressured to buy any insurance I didn’t want.

I was never “forced” to buy insurance. When I asked why the price was higher than what I was promised by discovercars.com, the agent told me “it’s just a deposit that will be credited back to you when the car is returned “. Why mislead me that way? That’s being dishonest in my book.

And to fully respond to your question “it would be interesting to read what Europcar had to say”, they told me simply that I signed the contract so it’s done, I agreed to it. Being late to my appointment (due to their long line at the counter) did not help in me signing the contract ☹️
