Museum Bag Check

In Paris the museums seem to have eliminated or reduced the practice of checking a purse or backpack at the coat and bag check desk. The Musee d'Orsay website says 'no backpacks'. Rick Steve's guide notes 'Day bags (but nothing bigger) are allowed in the museum. I carry a small backpack when I travel, it's big enough for a jacket or two, a water bottle and not much more. Can I check it at the check-desk?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Don't know. We were just in Paris with small day bags - maybe 12x14x4 - and had no problem at d'Orsay although people with bigger bags were being asked to check them. The same museums were looser.

You can ask, but there isn't a lot of space available, so people with larger bags might be given preference and you'll have to carry your own stuff. If possible, and the weather permits, try to leave as much as possible back at the hotel.
