Mt. Saint Michel from Milan

We plan to visit MSM from Milan. We are trying yo avoid Paris and just fly to Nantes, then rent a car to go to Pontorson yo visit MSM. The only drawback is only 1 flight available at descent time, easy jet leaving Milan at 1.10pm. I am worry of cancellation. Has anyone done this route?

tati.sausalito,
You do realise that it is just over two hours drive from Nantes to Pontorson. The flight takes about 1 3/4 hours, so factor in time to disembark and get your car rental and, if all is on time, and the rental moves quickly, you could conceivably get to Pontorson by 6:00. Are you staying in Pontorson, or on the Mont? If Pontorson, allow time to check into your lodgings and drop your bags. Are you flying back to Milan the next day? How long at MSM? Where to after that?

It is definitely not a day trip from Milan.

If you do not have other French destinations on your itinerary, it might not be the best use of your time in Europe. Visiting Mont Saint Michel takes about 3 hours, compared to the almost full day it will take you to get there from Milan. Italy is full of dramatic churches, sanctuaries and monasteries: you could visit the Basilica San Giulio on Lake Orta, for example, or the Oropa sanctuary, or the Certosa di Pavia.

I doubt that many people would plan such a trip. You must have additional plans for a stay in France besides MSM. In which case, you might consider reworking the itinerary. However, to your original question - no one can guarantee that a flight wont be cancelled. If it is, you would be entitled to free rebooking on the next available flight and compensation under EU rules.

If you do make the flight, you wont arrive in time to enter the Abbey that day. But you will be in time for dinner and a view of the sunset. I particularly loved the view of MSM at twilight from the causeway.

Hello everyone, to answer Judy's question where we would stay, we will stay in Pontorson.

I understand Italy is beautiful. We have been to Italy several times as well in the past. This MSM is on our last leg of Europe trip after Dolomites and Varenna, before going back to Houston. We have been to Paris 3x, so for us this time, one full day in Paris is enough time to visit places that we love.

Ive looked at the route to MSM, it will take longer if we fly to Paris, then go to Montparnasse train st to go to Pontorson.

What restaurant to reserve to see sunset?

tati.sulistio,
What day are you going? I would check when the sunset is for that day (or thereabouts) to make sure you will be able to be at a restaurant at the time you want. Summer, fall? Sunset, as you are aware, will be much earlier in the fall. Were you thinking of having dinner at a restaurant on the Mont? If so, be sure to check the location to guarantee a view, and make a reservation.
Best of luck in your endeavor!

tati,
Sunset in Pontorson on Sept. 15 is 8:19 pm. I would suggest being at your table by 7:30 to enjoy a leisurely dinner through the sunset hour. Best of luck!
