We will be in Paris for a week, starting Saturday. I am craving moules! We are staying in the first arrondissement near Pyramides. Any favorite spots near there or a short Metro ride away?
Leon has them - all you can eat, frites, too.
The closest spot is the Champs-Elysees.
Leon de Bruxelles, that is. There is one at Bastille, too.
I LOVE Leon de Bruxelles moules!! Have had them in a variety of preparations several times. You are making my mouth water.......
Au Trappiste at 4 rue St Denis for Belgian beer and mussels. Take Metro Line 14 from Pyramides to Chatelet (1 stop) or walk 20 minutes.
If you find yourself near the southern bit of Luxembourg Gardens/Montparnasse, Academie de la Biere serves up a fine bowl of moules, also with a massive beer list. I found the St. Stefanus blonde from Belgian a nice match.
Leon de Bruxelles is indeed awesome! They have some nice desserts too. I love their moules covered in cheese, garlic, and tomatoes. Despite being a chain, it's quite delicious. The one on the Champs-Elysees has outside seating,
There is also a chain called La Criee that has great seafood. There's one near Saint Michel, one near Notre Dame, and I think several more. They have an excellent soupe aux poissons and profiteroles as well and a great prix-fixe menu.
We strolled down Rue Mouffetard (Latin Q) on our last day in Paris, stopping midway for lunch. All the nearby restaurants had Moules/Frites on their menu. Mine were great! (although I'm not sure how they can not be). Aside: I was quite surprised at the reasonable cost of dining in Paris. We tended to eat the larger meal during lunch, so I'm sure that is part of it. However, given no tax is added to the published price, and tipping is more moderate, even with the current exchange rate, most of our meals tended to be less than those in major US cities. Nice surprise.
Thanks everyone! I am thinking Au Trappiste for lunch today and Leon later in the week. Thank goodness we have time to try both! Will let you know.
We did eat at Au Trappiste on Sunday and enjoyed it very much. Straightforward, huge portions of moules and large cannot-eat-them-all buckets of frites. The waiter did a great job of beer matching for us, too. The moules were smallish and not all uniform, but all tasty. I had Moules Marinière and Ric enjoyed the Provençale. It is a rather pub-like atmosphere (as far as the French do pubs), with a major focus on beer. Prices are reasonable. I think my formule including beer and frites was €17.90. Ric's was a bit higher as Provençale was not included in the formule
Today we tried Leon de Bruxelles. Oh là là was it great! Prices a bit higher unless you have the lunch special (more on that below). Ric stuck by the Provençale preparation and I ventured into Moules au Roquefort. Both were superb. A sensibly smaller portion of fries accompanied and just enough baguette to take advantage of the sauce.
The lunch special included moules, frites, salade, dessert for €27.90. Quite a deal! But if I understood the menu correctly, you had 45 minutes to finish and pay or the price went up 5% for every 5 minutes you stayed at the table. I am too Italian to rush so we paid full price.
My only regret is that we will not have time to eat there again this trip. Thanks for the recommendations everyone!
