We'll be doing a tour of France in late May, wondering about small town hotels without a/c. If windows are open at night are there typically screens on them? If not then are mosquitos a problem?
screens have apparently not been invented yet in Europe and the devices to discourage mosquitos --little plug in coils etc are worthless. Definitely being your own deet infused effective repellent because what you can typically buy locally is also not effective. I get the towelettes to carry in a back pocket in case the mosquitos descend at dusk. You may not need it where you are -- but be prepared. We had lots of mosquitos in Italy in May and have encountered them in France as well.
I also additionally pack a flyswatter if I know I might be staying in a hotel no ac. Bugs love me, so it comes in handy.
Yes, my wife -- who apparently is delicious to mosquitoes -- already has been sampled this Spring. Expect mosquitoes.
Window screens, while uncommon, aren't entirely absent in France. But one of the safest bets you could ever place would be to wager that there won't be screens wherever you're staying.
Generally, mosquitoes aren't a big problem, but they are present and usually will make their presence known, if only with a nip or two.
