A few restaurants: Brasserie du théâtre, Café du théâtre, Georges Café, l'Artichaut, Umami and Umami Bistrot, Le petit jardin, Le Gazette Café for a place with events always happening (music, talks, ) all in center of the city. Reserve wherever possible. If you chose the Citadines, it's near Les Bistronomes (all housemade French), but you'll also find Isabella (Greek), Sumac (Middle Eastern), Il Gallo Piccolo (Italian), Mimino (Armenian, Georgian, Turkish), Table d'Alexandre (French, SE Asian) , Coté Sushi (Japanese, Peruvian). Most open for lunch M-F, but a few are open in the evening.

Bakeries: Du rêves et du pain, Maison Bonnaire are two.
Coffee: Café Bun, Cold Drip Food and Coffee, Cofftéa in the Polygone shopping mall.

From my April 2023 notes:
Ikonka, Montpelier (select from salads of the day, best salad of the trip, take out and street seating, known as best croissant in Montpellier)

Mahe, Montpelier (wonderful dinner)

Chez Pinot, Times, Les Garcon - wine bars in Montpellier
