We will be spending 2 weeks in Montpellier and 1 week in Lucca, italy in sept. What would be the best way to get to Lucca ? Maybe drop off our rental car in France and take a train into Italy or drop off our car fly??and if so what city would be the smartest way? We understand it is a t least an 7 hour drive, but should not bring a car we rented in France into Italy because of the cost. Any suggestions?
Nice would be a nice place to spend a night and Nice airport is a convenient car drop point, followed by half-hour bus into town, or you could drop the car in town. Trains from Nice to Lucca take 6.5 - 8.5 hours (with the faster connections departing in the afternoon, e.g, 13:50 from Nice to arrive 20:30 at Lucca).
