My husband and I are planning on spending a week there in June. Is it worth it?
We spent 4 nights in Montpellier and enjoyed it very much. In addition to what the city has to offer there are many day trip opportunities.
Lots of things to do and see in Montpellier and its surroundings
Start at the beginning:
Montpellier and the region:

Montpellier itself:
It is a great base for the area - you can easily day trip to Carcassonne, to Sette, to Nimes etc and we went on a small van tour of villages, geological sites and the Abbey where the cloisters were moved to New York City. Picnic by an interesting lake. d
This was the tour we did and it was well worth it.

While we try to reserve such things direct from the vendor, this small vendor appears to work through agencies like Get Your Guide to market their trip. It was totally satisfactory although the meeting spot was not very convenient -- it was reachable by public transport.
And if you go, have a drink one evening at sunset here; it was pretty swell.

This is the company that did janettravels' excursion into the back country.

They also offer private tours: https://www.wisud.com/en/produits/excursion-privee-depart-montpellier
It's a wonderful, all day trip that covers a lot of ground for an extremely reasonable price. June is perfect because you'll have maximum daylight. One of my sons and my granddaughter took this tour and loved it. It's 10 euros less booking directly rather than the Tourist Office or where Janet booked.
My son also took a wine tour which included lunch at the guide's parents' home in a village. He had a blast. The Tour de France was coming through that day, so it was a real adventure getting around the blocked roads to the wineries:

thanks for that Elizabeth. I could find it on viator and get your guide but didn't find the original vendor when I was looking. I agree it is much better to book that way. FWIW. Viator was more expensive than Get Your Guide -- and of course the original vendor better yet.
