My son is going to be studying in Paris for the next five months, and I was wondering if there are monthly metro passes that are sturdier than the paper ones typically used? Or do you just load up trips on the same tickets?
The monthly Navigo Decouvert pass is a credit-card size plastic card with imbedded RFI chip that opens the turnstiles. It has your picture on it, which you bring when you buy it for attachment by the sales agent. 1 1/4" by 1".

Use google translate to read this French version. Also, investigate if there is a reduced price student pass.
My wife and I have weekly Navigos , and I would assume the physical incarnation is the same for the monthly . When they process and assemble the pass , it is inserted into a clear , rigid , plastic holder which is impervious to damage by bending , twisting or dropping - no need to remove the card from the holder to utilize it .
The pass card is and has been for at least 10 or 12 years hard plastic. You load it with whatever pass you want to buy i.e. a weekly pass or monthly pass. They run calendar week and calendar month and are the biggest bargain in transport in the world. You need a postage stamp size head shot which can be sized and printed off on your home computer -- 24/30mm. You purchase the card for 5 Euro and you get a kit which you assemble sliding the card into a plastic case once the photo is mounted. Sometimes the clerk if s/he has no line will do it for you, but usually they just give you the kit. You can buy it from a sales clerk charged or you can charge or recharge it on the machines in the metro.
Yes, the Forfait Imagine R is a yearly pass for students under 26, and would be a tad cheaper than the Navigo Mois for 5 months.

I think the school must issue a voucher for students, in order for them to qualify. You should contact the school and find out.
Thanks for all these great replies!
