Mont St Michel to Bordeaux

We are traveling as a group of 8 in September through Belgium and France.

Following our stay in Mont St Michel, we will drive to Bordeaux, which is approx. a 7-hr drive.

What are the pros/cons for splitting the drive up into 3.5 hours and stay in the Loire Valley overnight, versus driving directly? We will be moving a lot on this trip, so another one night stay is a con. We love wine from the Loire Valley, a big plus.

For those of us who are in favor of stopping, where a good place to stay?

For just one night, I would not detour to the Loire Valley. I say detour, because I don't think you have the lower Loire in mind, and you'd probably want to head east of Angers, which would add at least 2 hours to the total driving time.

We enjoyed an overnight in La Rochelle last June. The town is only a few miles out of your way and about 2/3 of the way to Bordeaux. We had one of the best meals of our trip at Le Flot, a restaurant near one of the towers.
