Hotel choices on the island are limited and several run by the same people; the Croix Blanche is also connected with the Saint Pierre and the Vieille Auberge.

We stayed at and enjoyed Les Terrasses Poulard. Make your reservations in advance, we didn't and almost couldn't find a place to stay. Enjoy it! There is nothing as magical as wondering around there in the evening after most of the tourists have left.

I stayed at Le Mere Poulard, and was happy with it. It is old, simple, and funky… and the most I've ever paid for lodging in Europe (but I tend to travel simply). However I'm glad I stayed there. It's the first hotel when you enter MSM, which means you don't have to drag your luggage up hills and stepped streets to get to the building; they carried my suitcase up the stairs to my room; the room was comfortable: and I had a lovely view. I also found the front desk staff to be pleasant and helpful. Just don't expect luxury… Think more in terms of an elderly grandmother's house. I didn't eat at the restaurant; it was extraordinarily expensive.

It is definitely worth it to stay on the island, and I will stay at this hotel again because of the convenience of the location. Book early since there are few hotels on the island; this was the only room left on the island when I booked a couple of months ahead for a September visit. I travel light, but if you have lots of luggage, I would suggest storing some of it on the mainland. I would not want to be dealing with heavy luggage at MSM.
