What is the most cost effective way to get from Paris to Mont St Michel?

Cheapest way is usually by bus (coach), Flixbus plies the route, but it takes over five hours.
If you find a good TGV fare (in advance), much more efficient to take TGV from Paris to Rennes, then bus from Rennes to the Mont.

Last time I went, I took the TGV to Rennes, then a rental car from the station.
