We will be traveling August 10th 2024 from Paris to Mont Saint Michele by train, do we have to book in advance? We are booked in to stay there 1 night, I’m am trying to find the best way to travel from there to Honfleur , spend the night there and then head back to Paris. We do not want to hire a car.
If you are asking about booking a visit to Mont Saint-Michel itself, no. You do not need to book in advance. The town itself is free to visit, and you can walk up and get tickets to the abbey anytime. If you are asking about booking a place to stay there, yes. You should definitely book in advance.
As far as getting to Honfleur from MSM, it will be very difficult and time-consuming without a car. It would take multiple buses and trains, and is probably best done by going back through Paris. With a car it is slightly over a two-hour drive. Without one, there is no direct, or even semi-direct public transportation. They are simply at opposite ends of Normandy.
Looks like you could get a train from Pontorson-St Michel to Trouville - Deauville, and then taxi or bus on to Honfleur. It would be a long trip, though, likely 10 hr or so in total, with a couple of changes of trains. Check the SNCF website for schedules.
I don't even like renting a car on vacation, but we had one for this journey. Sad to say, the first reply is 101% correct. You don't mention D-Day Beaches etc., but they are hard to do well without private transportation of some kind. (I just mean to include paid tours that include a car or van.)
You do know that the train doesn't stop at the entrance to MSM, right? You have to take a short public bus ride just to get to the visitor center. I'm not referring to the much talked-about but trivial "causeway", which is quite walkable. I'm talking about Pontorson to MSM.
There is absolutely no way to get from MSM to Honfleur by public transport in less than 6 or 7 hours.
You should consider another place to visit before heading back to Paris.
For example Saint Malo, it can be reached by train from Pontorson in 45 minutes (via Dol de Bretagne), and there are TGV trains Saint Malo→Paris
Thank you all so much.
Yes Tim , I know we will have to take a bus. I assume they run quite often.
Thank you Jului for suggesting St Malo, sounds like it will be must easier😊We have already taken a trip to the beaches in Normandy.
How long is the train journey from Paris to Mont Saint Michele and what trains do we catch
From Paris Montparnasse station you take the train to Pontorson station, there is then a shuttle to go to the MSM.
I don't know if there are direct trains, otherwise it's a TGV train to Rennes and then a regional train to Pontorson, The average journey time should be 3h45
See on the SNCF website:

And just for your information, it is Mont Saint Michel, and not Mont Saint Michelle, Saint Michel being the archangel who requested the construction of the MSM sanctuary
Thank you so much😊💖
I'd suggest the Keolis bus company

They have buses from Rennes to Mont Saint Michel and to St Malo. You can take a high speed train from Paris to Rennes and then catch a bus which gets you very close to the shuttle bus across the causeway (no stop in Pontorson). The next day you could take their other route to St Malo.
Thank you very much
