Mont Saint Michel to La Charite'-sur-Loire

We have an extra day when travelling between Mont St. Michel and La Charite'-sur-Loire where we'll be staying for 5 days. Where do you suggest we stay for a night or sights to see en route to our destination?

Can you stay on Mont St. Michel? I've always thought I'd like to do that, if I ever get a chance to visit, and see it without the day visitors.

Does anyone know whether we can take a lunch cruise or short day cruise while in Briare?
