We'll be stopping for a night on Mont Saint-Michel in October. We intend to book a hotel on the island. Any comments related to preferences among the few hotels available? We realize they will be a bit pricey and perhaps "touristy"... we're OK with that but does anyone have preferences or comments related to a specific hotel?
I stayed here.

You reach rooms via a spiral staircase so if stairs are an issue, this may be a challenge. I know this hotel had some “sister” hotels owned by same company on the island. Room was what you would expect. Small, clean, and incredibly convenient for seeing the non busy times on the island.
We stayed at Le Mouton Blanc. Clean enough. It's further along the road, but we had to backtrack and check in at another place closer to the TI (I think Hôtel Les Terrasses Poulard). The wifi in our rooms didn't work well so we sat on a bench near check in to check email. The check in place had a storeroom for luggage so we were able to go on a mudflat walk in the morning after checking out. We went with hopes of charm and location rather than luxury and really liked it.
You want an on island hotel reservation for this October?
We stayed in the same hotel that Carol mentioned above…..it was wonderful. So many people will try to discourage you from staying on the island…..for us it was a bucket list item….the tourists all leave around 4 pm and you have the island to yourself…..there is magic when you look out your hotel window that night and realize you are looking out on the water that surrounds the island. We threw coats on over our pj’s and ran down to the gate of the island and took the glorious pictures of the island all lit up that night. We parked in the secured lot, took only what we needed for one night and walked across the bridge to the island……such a sweet memory for us!
My family stayed in Les Terrasses Poulard in June. I would recommend it only if you are in a room with a clear view of the bay (and thus a breeze). We had two rooms, one in the lower building with the reception desk and one in the separate annex. Despite having to climb some additional stairs, the annex was far preferable since it has a view of the bay and had a clear breeze. The Wi-Fi also worked better in this room. The lower room window opened onto a courtyard that was not very far off the ground and did not seem very safe. However, leaving the window closed was not a great option because the room became unbearably stuffy. There also was a musty odor in that room.
The staff was great and the breakfast was adequate. The main issue is the room location.
Like PlannerMom said. I stayed at the Moulin Blanc, and had to backtrack to check in at one of their other hotels. You'll find that almost all (except one) hotels and restaurants on the island proper are owned by the same Poulard group. They indeed have a monopoly, most visitors don't return, and hence they have no vested interest in a "memorable experience" (sadly). But it is still worth it to stay on the island IMHO, and I wouldn't do it any other way (after two trips, one on island, one off).
