Mont Saint Michel Hotel Recommendation

Any hotel recommendations on the island (other that Hotel La Mere Poulard which is not available for our date in May). Also dinner recommendations. Thanks.

Will you have a car? If so, drive to Cancale and eat the best Oysters in the world. The oysters I ate weren't any more expensive than anywhere else. They were normal size but definitely tasted better than any I've had elsewhere. My Breton girlfriend tells me of huge oysters in Cancale, one oyster is an entire meal - but I didn't see them.

I really wanted to have an omelet on MSM. At a price of 35 to 50 euros (I'm not exagerating), however, it was more than I was willing to pay.

Sterling there are only something like 32 hotel rooms on the island in total, so you best grab what you can.

There are many, many hotels close to the Island if you can't find a room on MSM. We stayed in one a couple of miles away and went to the Island early in the day. Another time we were at a friend's house way inland in Normandy and did a day trip to Mont St. Michel. Normandy away from the coast is wonderful and under-appreciated by most North American tourists, or so it seems.

Rick recommends the Hotel du Guesclin on the island--it's the only family-run hotel left. Do stay on the island if you can--the night is magical. If you can't get a room on the island, try the La Jacotiere B&B, which has a great view and is within walking distance of the shuttle bus that takes you to the island.

We stayed at Hotel du Guesclin last September and took the half board option which included dinner and breakfast. Our room overlooked the water/mudflat. The dinner was very nice and the service was excellent. Be sure to go outside the gate after dark for night photos of the abbey. We arrived about a half hour before the abbey opened the next morning. We were second in line and were able to get some people free pictures after entering.

There are five hotels inside the walls. Check for availability on each hotel website rather than a third party booking site.
