Monet’s gift to France

It’s been 100 years ago that Claude Monet agreed to give the Nymphéas, the series of enormous paintings known as The Water Lilies. Today they remain in the Musée de l’Orangerie. They are housed in two huge oval rooms that were adapted to Monet’s design. As a fan of impressionist & post-impressionist I have fond memories of The Water Lillies and other wonderful works such as Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso, Renoir & Rousseau.

💕Was that not the most awesome thing and I wonder if he had any idea how enduring his gift would be? 💕

One guide I had for Orangerie said Monet felt so bad about not being able to serve in WWI that those feelings spurred his idea to gift to the nation.

And that marvelously lit room they are housed in makes them even more magnificent.

“Was that not the most awesome thing and I wonder if he had any idea how enduring his gift would be?” I so agree. Wish we had a guide when we visited. Thanks Pam, for sharing the feelings that spurred his idea to gift to the nation. Edited to add: https://www.musee-orangerie.fr/en/node/33
