Monaco bus not as described in RS guidebook, no Uber

So we had a frustrating Sunday, yesterday in Monaco. Got there OK by train but when we tried to follow the bus instructions in the RS France guidebook we were stuck. We took the down escalators to the harbor area by the little church, but we couldn’t find any red machines to buy bus tickets and after 20 mins did not see bus#1 or bus#2. Finally decided to trudge up the long and steep hill to the casino. Missed the last audio guided tour of course. Tried to call an Uber to get to the prince’s palace and found out that Uber is not allowed in Monaco. At this point we decided to walk back down to the harbor area and take the escalators + train home as we were hot (30 C with strong sun).
What did we do wrong? Why didn’t the guidebook warn us abour no Uber?

If you prefer to use a guidebook as opposed to using the internet, you will also have to bear the disadvantages of that.
Europe is constantly evolving, and many things change very quickly. The only advantage of a guidebook is that monuments, museums, and other sights don't change location so quickly. But never rely on what the guidebooks say about how to get there, how to get tickets and their prices.
We all know Uber is banned from picking up in Monaco. Uber will say 'no rides available'. A solution is to take an uber outside of Monaco and let you bring to your destination.

It is my understanding that you can't count on Uber being available in all European cities.

So guys, among other things I wanted to warn other Monaco tourists that Uber has been excluded by the Monaco government , this is definitely not common knowledge and would have been helpful to know, as this was my backup plan (only). Apparently there may be a taxi app but that requires registration, extra steps unless known about and done ahead of time. Uber has worked just fine in Paris & Antibes. And guys, stop the armchair traveling, I did plenty of internet research,, but mass transit info is notoriously often out of date. Look at the Paris Metro and RER and the changes to the Navigo card as an example. None of the replies have explained what happened to the red ticket machines! Does anyone know?
How about Bus#1 and Bus#2??

@Bruce, I believe the bus company announced that it was getting rid of the red ticket machines in 2023 with a plan to be totally digital. Sounds like they got there by 2025. As to the buses, did you have the Monapass app downloaded to your phone or use the cam.mc website to plan your trip? Depending on the schedule 20 minutes is not that long to wait for a bus on a Sunday. I think the buses run every 20 to 25 minutes on Sundays so if you were near a stop and just missed one, you could easily have a 20-minute wait for another. The schedule and list of stops are available at the website which I think you would have come across during your internet research.

Monaco has become a totally digital society and paper ticket machines have been eliminated. Bus #1 and #2 are still running, but I just don't know where you were trying to get on it. You are mentioning a 'little church', perhaps you are pointing to the Eglise de Sainte Dévote, but there is no bus stop at that location. All information here https://www.cam.mc/horaires/0-1

Out of interest I have just looked up the bus system website- https://www.cam.mc/en/commuting

Unless that is out of date you are supposed to be able to buy tickets onboard for 2,00 € each (with a free transfer) or pay by tapping your debit/credit card on board- for 1,50 € a ride with a daily cap of 5,50 €

The website also has timetables and route maps for buses 1 and 2- both of which are supposed to run 2 or 3 times each hour on a Sunday (so every 20 to 30 minutes).

Route 2 is meant to call at the Railway Station.

I have no idea what Rick's books say, but that is what their website says. As someone who has never been to Monaco I have to take that at face value.

In fact, busses were for free yesterday (from September 19 to October 1, 2025, on the occasion of the Monaco Yacht Show).

Ok, these are better answers. Does remind me a bit about Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, perspective is everything.

You can take an Uber by taking escalators/stairs up the hill and taking one from Beausoleil, across the border. Above the Casino Gardens is one place where it is a short journey. If you Google Uber in Monaco you can see numerous references, and more detailed instructions like in the Best of Nice blog.

For future reference, the website mentioned above (https://www.cam.mc/horaires/0-1) is "404: NOT FOUND"

It's too late to help the OP on this particular issue, but I have to stick my nose in and mention: I think the internet information is only as good as the organization or people who are updating it, and that can be soooo variable. So I wouldn't totally trust it either.

Here's another approach to finding out useful (current) information: before embarking on a journey that requires a precious investment of time (and/or money, but time is more valuable!), ask a local. For me, that's usually the hotel person, or TI if convenient. It's harder if you can't 100% communicate due to language barrier, but it's always worth a try, and I always get more than I bargained for (ha ha). Unless of course the person doesn't want to be bothered at all, but that is a small percentage of time.

And that's my two cents, NOT judging anyone who gets frustrated with the byzantine ways to navigate in a completely unfamiliar environment!
