Mint St Michel Day Trip from Paris

My husband and I will be in Paris for a week in November. We’re considering a self-guided day trip to Mont St Michel. I see that TGV train service and a bus will get us there in about three hours but based on the schedule, we’ll arrive in the late morning. I am concerned that this will be peak tourist time and it will be too crowded to really enjoy the experience.

Has anyone visited MSM from Paris as a day trip without taking a guided tour? If so, what was the experience like and are there any specific things we should keep in mind as independent travelers?

Thanks!
Chris

I was there january 2nd 2015 arriving at around 10 and it was not too bad but once noon arrived it got really crowded. It is a vertical experience lots of steps. You got to be in shape no elevators. What was crowded in 2015 is even worse today all over Europe. There is greater interest in travel to Europe coming from the Asian markets. Big time. Maybe arrive later afternoon and stay the night or in Pontorson so you can see it lit at night

We did a day trip from Paris and the train was very very delayed and we landed up only having about 2 hours to spend there, had to figure out the connecting train in Rennes since our ticketed train was long gone as was the bus to St Michel we were supposed to take. TGV did a great job of getting us there since they caused the delay, they hired Taxis for us and the handful of other travelers in the same situation. It was Beautiful and I am glad we did it. We went in October and I did not feel it was too crowded.

I'm going to have to express the opinion that this is a bad idea. There is just too much travel time compared to the amount of time available to actually see the attraction.

We visited in 2017 and were delighted, but we stayed there.

It’s a bad idea. The train does not go directly to the Mont. You will visit France again. We went on our seventh or later trip to France, in our late 50’s.

Given how short the days are in November, and how dreary the weather can be in the northwest of the country at that time of the year, it's a hard "pass" for me. There are so many magical sights to choose from from Paris that are nearer and easier to reach.
