Middle/Southern France

Hi!

We will be staying in Kaiserslautern in June and July. We have about 3-4 extra days to do whatever. I haven't ever really thought about it before, but our host suggested taking her car on a mini little tour of the middle/southern areas of France. I thought I needed to put out some feelers on some interesting places to go to. I don't even know if taking a car would be better than a train, but kind of thinking like just driving around for a few days?!?!?

Any suggestions or comments on this would be greatly appreciated. Again, I hadn't even ever really thought about adding this to our trip until today, so any information about traveling these areas would be new to me.

A free car is a good deal and driving is ideal for an excursion along the wine roads in Alsace (Colmar and around) and Burgundy (including Dijon and Beaune). You could drive to Burgundy in 4-5 hours (versus trains take 6 hours with 2 connections), but you don't have time to get much further south. See www.viamichelin.com for driving directions.

Thanks Laura! Good ideas and glad to know that the car ride would be doable.

This is about 1100km round trip ...
Day 1 - Drive to Strasbourg - visiting Colmar
Day 2 - Drive to Dijon - visiting Beaune
Day 3 - Drive to Reims - visiting Epernay
Day 4 - Return to Kaiserslautern

Or staying in Germany...
Day 1 - Drive to Trier - 1 night
Day 2 - Drive Mosel Valley to Koblenz - 2 nights
Day 3 - Cologne or Aachen day trip
Day 4 - Return to Kaiserslautern

Burgundy is stunning -- and even more so if you like the wine :) Highly recommend!
