Midday travel between Mont St. Michel and Rennes?

I realize there are hundreds of posts about Mont St. Michel, but I haven’t (yet!) been able to find an answer to this particular question, so here goes:

My husband and I will be hiking the GR 34 over the course of four days in September from St. Malo to Mont St. Michel, arriving at MSM in the late afternoon/early evening. The next morning, we plan to tour the Abbey at the earliest possible slot (9:30), then make our way to Rennes where we’ll rent a car for further travels. Ideally, we’d like to leave MSM around noon. However, the Keolis bus to Rennes only runs at 11:00 am, 5:00 pm, and 6:00 pm. It seems we’d either have to rush our Abbey tour to make the 11:00 departure, or hang out with the MSM crowds all afternoon, neither of which is an appealing prospect after 4 days/45 miles on our feet.

Any thoughts/suggestions on:

  1. Alternate ways to get from MSM to Rennes in the early afternoon?
  2. A closer location to rent a car (we fly home from Rennes, so that’s why we’d planned to rent our car there, but we’re open to other ideas), AND a way to get there?

Thanks!

Depending on day of week and time of year, there is a local bus to Pontorson and then TER trains to Rennes.

PlannerMom, thanks so much for the tip. I checked into the schedules and found a bus from MSM that is scheduled to arrive at the Pontorson Gare at 1:25, then a TER train from Pontorson to Rennes departing at 1:41. Is that enough time to make a connection?

I do recall reading somewhere that some of the Pontorson buses are specifically timed to work with the train schedule (for those who are day-tripping from Paris). Just didn't know if this was one of them, or if we risked missing the train if the bus was a few minutes late departing.

Pontorson is a tiny little station. 16 minutes is 10 too many ;)
