Mid-priced Parisan neighborhood hotel?

I am traveling with my husband and two adult children to a wedding near Angers in early July. We return to the US on a Friday around noon and would like to stay in Paris the night before our flight. I am looking for a hotel in a neighborhood that feels Parisian and where we can enjoy a good french meal nearby (doesn't have to be fancy) and find coffee and a boulangerie for breakfast in the morning. We won't have time to do any touring so being near the major sites is not a priority. Thinking Trocadero might fit the bill? Any suggestions for a hotel in the $200 range? We are not above choosing our hotel based on its proximity to an excellent bistro or restaurant!

Some of us who post here have stayed at Hotel Londres Eiffel. I liked it, and it’s within walking distance of much of what you describe (restaurants, boulangerie). At quick glance, they’re running about $183 per night.

I highly recommend staying in a hotel on Ile St Louis. It’s the little island next to the bigger island where Notre Dame is. It is in the heart of Paris, surrounded by the river with stunning views, and is the most charming neighborhood in Paris imo. I highly recommend these 3 hotels: Hotel de Lutèce, Hotel des Deux Iles, and Hotel Saint Louis en l’Isle. You might find one or more of them on Booking.com for a lower price. I book through Booking and have never had a problem, but many posters here recommend finding a price on Booking but dealing directly with the hotel.
You will not regret staying on Ile St Louis or any of these really good hotels.

Hi gay, the Hotel de l’Empereur was recommended by some RS travelers on this site. We’ve stayed there three times and booked for a fourth trip in 2022. It’s next to Napoleon’s Tomb, easy walking distance to Rue Cler and the Eiffel Tower. There are many nice restaurants and cafes in the area. Highly recommend it!

For only 1 night with a trip to the airport the following morning, consider staying at les Halls. You might be able to find a room at the Novotel les Halls around your budget, maybe l´Empire Hotel, or Hotel Duo. These hotels are surrounded by many, many restaurants, as well as the entrance to the RER B station to CDG (Châtelet/les Halls) which can take you to the airport for under 11€ each in about 30 minutes.

Have stayed in Hotel de l’ Empereur and Hotel de Lutece on the Ile St. Louis…….loved them both but would say that we preferred staying on the Ile St. Louis……wonderful bakeries for breakfast nearby and in the heart of Paris……..great location.

There are a couple of Ibis hotels adjacent to Place de la Repubique, which is a short taxi ride to Gare du Nord, if you are taking the train to Charles de Gaulle.
Republique is the central gathering place for Paris and in no way quaint. But the nearby Canal St-Martin glides through neighbourhoods.
Ibis hotels are not quaint either but instead are run very efficiently at mid-market prices. And Republique is served by five Metro llnes for easy access to the city.

Thank you for all of the recommendations. They are most helpful, even though some of the hotels are still closed. We are deciding between either the Ile St Louis or Le Marais. There are a couple of hotels (recommended here) on the Ile St Louis that are good possibilities. Reasonably priced 3 *** hotels so that will work. Also investigating hotels in the Marais and would welcome recommendations for 3*** and 4**** there.

Just remember the French star system has nothing to do with the quality of the hotel, does not tell you if it’s a nice hotel or a flea bag dump. It’s only for amenities: hairdryer, phone, tv, etc. Do not pick a hotel in France based on stars.

My favorite area is Ile St Louis, as I said above, and my 2nd favorite is the Marais… so good choice on narrowing down areas.

Frequent poster JHK would have great recs for the Marais, hopefully she’ll read your post, or you could PM her. Put JHK in the Search bar to find her.

If you are using CDG in early July, there are planned strikes for early July. As anything could happen, I recommend your crosschecking your itinerary with announced airport strikes. If your itinerary corresponds with announced strikes, I would spend the night at an airport hotel.

Even if you avoid the strike actions, it will be much easier, likely cheaper, and a lot quicker to stay somewhere on the Right Bank if you are only staying one night and leaving for the airport in the morning.

I believe the airport workers strike is scheduled for 7/1-7/5. Bets, a frequent poster, has said it does not usually affect international flights, but there are no guarantees.

I did not know about the planned strikes. Just airport workers or trains also?

Great to have that info up front-thanks!

I just helped a friend book a double room for mid-July at Hotel Les Tournelles for about $160 for mid-July. Hotel les Tournelles is a great little hotel in Le Marais -- note the rooms are not large. You mention that you are "not above choosing our hotel based on its proximity to an excellent bistro or restaurant." That is as good a reason as any to choose a hotel. I will limit myself to a 5-9 minute walk from the hotel but even with that limit I can think of a couple of great places. Les Tournelles is located steps away from Le Petit Marché, which if it is open is terrific. The concierge at Le Pavillon de la Reine recommended it to me and they were absolutely correct. Chez Janou is another restaurant that is nearby. It's okay/good but the Le Petit Marché is better IMO. You could also walk 4 minutes to Restaurant L'Ange 20, which is also fabulous. Reservations are a must at Restaurant L'Ange 20 or at least they used to be same for Le Petit Marché. Chez Janou is always busy and they, or at least the last time I ate there, only took phone reservations.

Thanks Avirosemail, the Edmond looks interesting. I will book it for my May 2022 trip. I have stayed in Paris many times, but not in the 17th arr.

Glad to hear it, CAJan -- if you've already stayed in the places American visitors typically stay, as listed in many suggestions above, then do consider the 17th near Parc Monceau or the 15th near Square Garibaldi -- both have easy metro and bus access and are what I think of when I see a post that mentions "a neighborhood that feels Parisian" as this one did.

The Rue de Levis is really for those who always expected to arrive and Square Garibaldi's rise is still a bit in-progress. Slight variations on the newly prosperous.

“American visitors typically stay,”
Avi, I grew up in Paris, it's my hometown. There’s a reason I like Ile St Louis and the Marais the best. And it’s not because I’m an “American visitor.” Personally, I don’t care tor the 15th or the 17th, which are not more Parisian than anywhere else, but we’re all different.

Susan, I like the Marais and Ile S-L also but the OP said "a neighborhood that feels Parisian" and as you indicate that could be taken in a variety of ways, and preferences vary. I don't mean to disparage other opinions, I mean to point out what I see as a gap between recommending spots that have a lot of American visitors and 'a neighborhood that feels Parisian' -- of course there can be overlap. I'm envious of your being so at home there in Paris!

[Part of feeling Parisian could be cosmopolitanism, and the lower arr. certainly do have a lot of that]

I took the fact that gayle and her family will only have 1 night in Paris into consideration when I recommended Ile St Louis. There is no place more beautiful, more charming, more central, or more Parisian in Paris than Ile St Louis. In my opinion, of course.

Loved my 2019 stay at Hotel de la Brettonerie in the Marais. Superb location!

gayle, for an inexpensive French meal I recommend Café Med on the main street on Ile St Louis. Nicely decorated, very French, charming, very inexpensive, good food. Three-course Prix-Fixe dinner was €14 in Oct, 2019. My favorite 3 course choices are: puréed vegetable soup, curried chicken & rice, tarte tatin… : )

I am following along as I need to book two nights in Paris. The hotels in Île Saint-Louis look wonderful as does Hotel les Tournelles but all are higher priced for the dates I’m looking.

Any other suggestions in Marais, the 6th or 7th arrondissement? I stayed in Saint Germain my last two trips (daughter went to SciencesPo) and am open to something new. Thank you in advance!

Susan, I am putting Café Med on my list for October!

It's short notice now, but Hôtel Caron in the 4th has been a reliable stop for us on many trips to Paris. Don't know if they would have any space at this late date. It has small rooms (naturally) and good air conditioning, so for four adults you'd need two rooms (making availability even less likely, unfortunately). There's a boulangerie with good breakfast service a short walk away (Miss Manon) and there also is an outlet of the Paul chain on the same street (rue Saint-Antoine).

Not far away from the hotel on the other side of Place des Vosges is a pretty good Provençal restaurant (Chez Janou -- reservation recommended).

Here’s another vote for the Hotel des Grandes Ecoles. We really enjoyed our stay there in 2018. We met people who had been coming to this hotel for years, including a woman who had stayed every year for the previous 40. She said: I have been all over the world, and this is my favorite spot.

I was able to book a tiny room Hotel Lutece but just received an email saying that they’re unable to confirm.

Has anyone stayed in https://dauphine-st-germain.com/ ? I like the location but have read some rooms are small and dark.

Hi Gayle,

I would love to know where you stayed. I received a message today from Hotel de Lutece that they cannot confirm my reservation in October but will try. It sounds like they may not be open.

Thank you!

@CaliMom -- on the map that place looks like a great find : closest metro stations are on line 8, which is a good one,
and the museums and plazas within walking distance are favorites! Did you find affordable rates?

I don't know the hotel but it is indeed a great location, with plenty of good bars and restaurants not too far, as well as interesting shops. It is a little bit away from the 'tourist trail' but main sights aren't too far.

CaliMom, that is one of the hotels Road Scholar uses for it's Paris programs. I have not stayed there, though.

Check out Des Deux Avenues Hotel, Rue de Poncelot. My daughter lived in this neighborhood with a family during her junior year abroad…so dated information, but this hotel was nice and has since been redecorated. There was a bakery/coffee shop almost across the street where we had breakfast each day. There were many restaurants for the neighborhood…I am thinking Wagram street particularly. At the time, the airport bus dropped/picked up at the Arc de Triomphe, so easy. On this street as well was a neighborhood outdoor food market (stalls). There were not other American tourists at the time. Granted, do your research as I am talking … circa 2006. It is also in your budget. My daughter’s French mother would bicycle the neighborhood doing her errands in her lovely French outfits. I would not hesitate to return here.

I can recommend the Hotel Jobo in the Marais (I just left today). It is not a bad trip to CDG (about an hour M 1 to RER B) and is in a very convenient location. The staff was really nice and the hotel has a fun quirky decor. I’m currently travelling alone and the single rooms are more like luxurious monk cells, but the double rooms seemed a pretty good size.

If you’re interested, rates are cheaper on the hotel site.
