Mid July to end July in France with Paris

I have exactly 11 days in France mid July, with kids (8/11), with Paris being part of the latter half (4 days), where else can I go that is kid friendly and set up base before heading to Paris; not too crowded (understanding this might be tough since its peak season). I looked at S. France but blogs say it would be crowded and very hot at this time.
Interests would be history/villages, kid-friendly activities
We will be relying on trains. Flying in from London Gatwick after wedding.
July 21 - fly from London Gatwick to ??
July 27-31 - train to Paris and train back to London on July 31
Planning is overwhelming - any suggestions would be appreciated (thank you)

One option perhaps:

We spent 4 days in the Loire with kids ages 5-15. Easy access to/from Paris so you don't spend a ton of time back and forth. We based in Amboise and visited the Clos Lucé (da Vinci's home), chateaux in Amboise, Chenonceau, and Chambord, all reachable by train and/or bus and shuttles. you can also go canoeing on the Cher river under Chenonceau (may need to book transport for this though). Lots of rental bike options in the area as well if your kids are in to that.

patelp25,
If you decide on the Loire, there are also the nearby troglodyte caves, which should be especially appealing to the children.
