Metz Hotels

Fingers crossed we will be in Metz next fall. We will arrive by train to meet our canal/biking group. I can find no references to accommodations on the forum. We will need close to the train station and the canal docks as we hope to walk to both locations. The barge will be moored in the canal between the Pont du Canal and the locks of Metz, near the rue de
Paris and the rue George Aimé. We prefer small hotels or even B&Bs. Any suggestions out there. Also, an other information about Metz is warmly welcomed.

There are a number of chain hotels sprinkled around the central station, as Google Maps or an on-line agency will show. I don't remember where I stayed a half-dozen years ago but these days would probably choose one of the two Ibis branches in the area. The station is at least a 10-block walk away from the main town square. I don't know about the canal. However, one of the main attractions, the satellite branch of the Pompidou art museum in Paris, is a few blocks in the other direction from the station.

Metz has pleasant gardens and a cathedral. Its cafes resemble Germany (in other words, they sell good beer). It was part of Germany for awhile and the train station, considered a landmark, was built during that time. It's worth a walk-around as well as a simple walk-through.

We really enjoyed a short visit to Metz a few years ago -- we were there to meet friends from the states prior to driving east to Strasbourg and then down through western Switzerland to Chamonix and then over to Lyon.

It doesn't fit your criteria other than by location, but we stayed at the rather boring looking (from the outside) Mercure on rue du Neufbourg because of its convenient access to the train station and other sights. Can't complain.

Metz is a nice town and I plan to visit again. Very German feeling to me. The Jardin d'Esplanade is beautiful and worth a visit. Lots of interesting architecture too -- it's fun to just stroll and observe. I wouldn't miss the Cathédral Saint Etienne and the medieval Porte des Allemands (gate of the Germans).

It's a few years since I've been but I was very impressed with the Hotel de la Cathedrale, which is in the same square as the cathedral in a seventeenth-century inn building. Warning, at least one American on TripAdvisor was very unhappy that there is no lift, but the stairs aren't steep.
