In October we are traveling to Northern Italy for two weeks and then going to Menton, France on the border with Italy to see a friend who has a vacation home there. We will be traveling with trains and buses while in Italy. My friend does not take her car when she goes to Menton. Has anyone been there and know if we can see the area without a car as we are there to see new things, not relax like my friend. She does mention going gardens. I have been to the Cote de Azur three times but my hubby has not. I know the train and buss #100 goes along the coast. Will they be enough to see some of the area? Also I have found a good one day tour of the area that gives a good drive by of the area but it only leaves from Nice which is 30 minutes from Menton. Does anyone know of tours from Menton for a day? Ideas are appreciated.
I don't know whether there are public tours originating from Menton, but the regional trains running along the coast will get you to many, many places. For most hill villages (including Eze and St-Paul-de-Vence) a bus leg will be needed.
I should think it would be possible to hop on a train to Nice to catch a bus tour there. How cumbersome that will be depends on where your friend's home is located vis-a-vis the nearest train station.
There might be useful public-bus connections from Menton, but a lot of the buses fan out from Nice.
Menton is known for its gardens. The two I went to were outside the town center. One had bus service; the other was walkable (for me) from Menton's second train station; I assume local buses would get you at least as close as that train station. Both gardens were on hillsides, so would probably not work well for those with mobility issues.
