Medical Travel Insurance

I am not talking about trip insurance (cancellations, interruptions, etc.)
Rather, I am curious about the "emergency" insurance I am hearing about -- emergency room, evacuation, and the like.

Does anyone on this forum have any insight to share?

I have looked into this some, I have learned that making sure that the policy (purchased only for the trip duration) is primary, so that you don't have to pay out of pocket yourself and then get reimbursed.

These are the companies that come up:

  • TinLeg
  • FlexPass
  • 7 Corners

Feedback greatly appreciated.

Thank you ChristineH

By the way, I understand there are some countries that require proof of insurance.

Both Travel insurance companies that I have used over the past five years handle both "medical" and "cancellation" issues. I wanted medical and evacuation since they were for ski trips. EA+ through my Chase credit card; Travel Insured International through my ski club. EA+ is an annual policy. Travel Insured has both a "trip" policy and an annual policy.

One thing to be careful about is your expectations for "evacuation." Many (most?) policies only evacuate you to the nearest place that provides medical services you require—not necessarily back home just because that is where you prefer to be treated.

Thank you NickB and PharmerPhil (and thank you PharmerPhil for the caution regarding evacuation!)

I use Faye. They are indeed a travel insurance, but the med pay and evacuation pay is excellent.
