Seems like Normandy has a rainy reputation. Just want to know what to be prepared for during my visit in mid-May. When it rains is it typically light or heavy? Does it last all day, or just breeze through?
Yes. No. Maybe. Its weather, so no one can predict whether you will have sunny days or an unexpected all day downpour. If you look at any of the online weather websites, you will see a 24% chance of some rain on any given day. The amount could vary from a brief shower to an all day light rain. Bring an umbrella and a hooded rain jacket.
Rain sometimes lasts all day, but especially near the coast the rain more typically comes in fronts where it will rain for 15 minutes to an hour, then it turns sunny or at least dry, then in 30 to 60 minutes or so, it may rain again. It can keep that up for days. The next day it may turn beautiful and sunny, or a longer-term storm may set in.
Obviously, be prepared for rain, and not just an umbrella, as the wind can be quite something.
Normans have a reputation in France for having the right answer when asked if it is going to rain:
-Maybe yes, maybe no
So don't wait for more precise weather forecasts
The only certainty is that there will be weather. Whatever you prepare for, it won't be that, so be prepared to be ambushed by the sun, rain, wind, maybe some sleety bits.
Thanks for the feedback. Since we are traveling with elderly folks on their first time to Europe, we may want to go somewhere that has more consistent and dry weather.
Our second option is Loire Valley. Will the weather be much better there?
Undoubtedly less risk of rain in the Loire Valley, but also fewer beaches, cider and cows.
On the other hand, more castles and Saumur-Champigny
