For future travelers, May 1 in Arles is wonderful. The Feast of the Guardians lasts much of the day, and is embraced by all. Before the parade of costumed locals, and guardians on horseback, everyone gathers, meeting friends and family. It then moves through various squares with traditional blessings, or historical highlights. In the afternoon, there is a 3+ hour event in the arena, highlighting bull "fights" (no bulls harmed - but obviously exhausted), and horsemanship. I was especially impressed with the women's choreography on horseback - in full costume, and all side-saddle! During the event, they also share some of the Arles history, but not being fluent in French, we could not appreciate the full depth.

The city is obviously more crowded, but not outrageously so. With the help of our hotel host, we were able to make reservations at a recommended restaurant the day in advance.

Our last stop before flying home was in Arles on May 1 and 2 (May 2 was market day). It was a great end to our Provence trip!
