Maussane-les-Alpilles

Hello, in RICK STEVES PROVENCE & THE FRENCH RIVIERA, Rick has two paragraphs about Maussane, and says, "If St. Remy feels too busy, sleep here." My wife and I have followed this advice twice in the past and were very happy to have done so. It's a quite livable town, not crowded, with an excellent food store (Le Jardin des Alpilles), a wine store, bakeries, convenient parking, and it's a good base for taking day trips to more picturesque villages in that part of Provence. We are going back in May, and are wondering if there are other towns like Maussane in Provence, towns that are pleasant, livable, and not the sort of plus beau villages that we love to visit but not stay in. For instance, based on RICK STEVES PROVENCE, Uzes seems like it might be a good option. We'll be in Provence for two weeks this May and would be grateful to hear any suggestions about plain, quiet, pleasant villages that would make good centers for our drives around the countryside.

Thank you,

David

Uzes is a wonderful place but with a population of 7,000 and many visitors, it's a town, not a village. We stayed there for five months. By the way, it's across the Rhone River, so it's administratively in Occitanie, not in Provence, though historically, it's hard to say where one region ends and the other begins.
