Flying into Marseille then traveling to Avignon to pick up a river cruise. Is taking a train the best way to go?
Hi Nancy,
Yep, the train is the way to go if you are staying in Avignon itself. There is a 5-minute shuttle from the Marseilles airport to the nearby Vitrolles Aerport train station, where there are local TER trains every hour to the Avignon Centre station, taking about an hour. Just buy your ticket on the spot. See www.sncf.com for schedules.
If you are planning on staying in a smaller town, outside of Avignon and plan on having a car, then I'd pick up a car at the Marseilles airport and drive directly there. See www.autoeurope.com for car rental options and www.viamichellin.com for driving routes and directions.
Do you know if there is any advantage to buying in advance (on line) to get a senior fare?
Senior fare is only a few euros less than the 18 euro regular fare. Since it's available online for tomorrow, it should also be available at the station. Even for bigger savings than that, we generally don't like to reserve ahead when coming from a flight.
