thinking of renting a boat with Marin D'Eau Douce Paris for a hour or two... as an American who does not speak fluent French is this a crazy idea as not knowing the language or the boating rules might be too much of a stretch... is this doable by tourists or is this a French local only thing?

We rented a boat with our two boys (12 and 14) last year and it was one of the highlights of the trip for them. Language, as usual, in Paris is almost never a barrier. Staff spoke enough English, us a little French, and boat instructions were mostly pictorial.
Overall, The boats are very easy to work with and are quite fun.
