Madrid to San Sebastian to Provence to Madrid

Hello. My husband and I are flying into Madrid next week, arriving on a Saturday morning, and will make our way via rental car up to San Sebastian for a Sun - Thur conference. Departing from SS on Friday, we wish to visit friends in Aix-en-Provence. We will have 6 days to get from San Sebastian to Aix and back to Madrid. We know it’s a lot of driving so we plan to make plenty of stops, but we’d love to have 2 full days in Aix if possible, and it’s important that we’re back in Madrid the day before our flight. Is this too ambitious? Any suggestions for our route? Many thanks!

We drove from San Sebastian across the north side of the Pyrenees. We had two overnights in the mountains, then stopped in Carcassonne and Collioure. You probably would head north after Carcassonne though. (We were going to the Costa Brava)
We chose to drive on the French side as the highway was closer to the mountains. Hopefully someone can take you the rest of the way. Montpellier? Marseille?

I would go to S Sebastián without rental car (flight or train), you don't need it there unless your conference is in an isolated place, in which case rent locally. Then take a PESA bus to Biarritz on Friday morning and rent a French car there. Drive it to Aix, with possible stops in Carcassonne and Arles, and fly back to Madrid from Marseille (where you drop the car).

Otherwise, Aix to Madrid is a really long drive...
