Hi Steven, nice articles. I loved reading Madeline with my niece when she was a child. She took French in high school so a few years ago I tried to find a book written in French for her. We looked all over France, finally a person at one bookstore told us that Madeline really isn’t French, she’s an “American invention”. We eventually found a book on Amazon. This year I saw a French version at the bookstore at the Louvre.
Thanks for this post--I loved Madeline as a child and in later years discovered the joy of his other writing--memoirs and he was quite a gourmand as well.
Delightful article. Bemelmans was really a genius.
