Macarons

Nearly died and went to heaven when we stumbled today upon the little unassuming storefront of Patrick Hermand in Vieux Lille.

Un believable. UN believable.

I thought we had found macaron heaven in Paris at Laduree and some others earlier this year. Not even in the same game let alone in the same league. UN believably good. So many special and fabulous flavours. So delicate and whispy yet powerful.

Flavours exactly as described.

Might be worth a 1 hour and 3 minute TGV train trip to LIlle and a 10 minute walk. You could do worse.

Lille doesn't have a huge amount to go in its favour other than the first driverless Métro, the birthplace of Charles de Gaulle, the birthplace of the ubiquitous bakery chain Paul, and some exquisite architecture. Now there is a real reason to go there.

Almost tempted to check travel connections now to sample macarons.

Nigel, thanks for the link. I checked out their website - the flavors sound delicious! Wish I could order some online and have them delivered; wish I could afford to go to France just to get awesome macarons; wish I lived in England so France was just a hop across the channel. Ah, wishing and hoping, planning and dreaming - story of my life.

Thanks a lot Nigel...now I'm craving some macarons! I'll have to wait just over 5 weeks until I'm in France and can get some.

What are you doing in France now?

35th wedding anniversary so basing near Lille for short trips to Brugge, Kortrijk, Gent and Ypres.

Researching a great cousin who was killed after the 3rd Battle of Passchendaele and never found. Photographed his name on the memorial at Tyne Cot and saw all the others of his regiment who were also never found or identified. 4 huge panels worth.

Bought my wife a super duper espresso maker which is fully automated. She's happy.

Oh, and eating Macarons.

Just here a few days...

BTW - first trip to Kortrijk.

Won't be the last. It is really a super little town, just into Belgium just a couple miles north of the border.

Thanks, Andrea

Confirmed it with a trip to the Gambetta location this evening. Easy parking, too. Oh, and the pastry too. Eclairs that are purty durn good. Had to do the scientific research, you know.

Happy anniversary! Enjoy Ghent!

I can't tell my sister about the macarons in Lille because she'll drag me back to France, and I'm hoping to go to Germany next year...
