Lyon to Medieval Village of Perouges

We will have a free afternoon in Lyon next April. We will have time in Lyon to wander the city ourselves the next day. Should we/is it feasible to take the train to the village of Perouges or should we just concentrate on seeing all that we can in Lyon?

Thanks for your age advice!

We spent the night in Perouges, but with a car. It is a memorable place, but too far for "an afternoon in Lyon." Superb info by Ben, thank you.

Edit: referring to Susan's post below, I have used a GPS in Pedestrian Mode for occasions like that. You need to know the battery is still in good condition. Don't turn it on until you get off the train, for example.

Ben, thank you very much. It does seem that it would be too much to do independently for a free afternoon and we may have to join a tour in order to fit it in. I appreciate all of your detailed information.

We did it by train in Dec 2012.
The only thing I'd add is I don't remember it being super easy to find the way up to the village from the train station. It wasn't far, maybe a few km's but not signed from the station. We asked someone at a shop how to get there. Once he pointed us in the general direction it was easy.
It is definitely worth a visit if you can fit it in. There is a pastry shop called Galette de Perouge that makes a nice pastry:) The pastry might even be called Galette.
We only stayed a few hours, being December, it was chilly and not a lot happening. It was a nice afternoon.
