Lyon to bordeaux in summer family trip !

Hi !
we (2 adults and 2 kids of 7 and 11) already looking at our next summer (july-august) trip.

We have think (and budget) for about a 22-26 days trip .

The plan:

1) arrival in Lyon (from Montreal) and stay in that region for 4-5 nights
2) Lyon to Vaucluse region. We would rent a villa with a pool and stay there fo 5-7 nights and do daytrip in tat region (Avignon, Nîmes)
3) roadtrip between that region and Bordeaux for the remaining 12-15 days (still have to decide where to stay, we love to get at least 3 nights in one place)
4) fly back to Montreal from Bordeaux

Questions:

1) how does it sounds ?
2) How will be the weather between july 6-7 to begin of august ? Hot I guess but manageable ?
3) Do we have time to go for 4-5 days in northern Spain ?

Any ideas are very welcome !

This sound fine. The weather will be hot.
I guess you could fit the Catalonia region in Spain from Avignon as there is a fast train 3hours from Nimes to Barcelona if you are not intending to drive. But you might be trying to do too much as you need go back up from there to get to Bordeaux area

Toulouse is a place you might stay for 3 nights, with a day spent day-tripping to Albi.

I'd definitely plan some time in the Pyrenees. It will provide a cool-weather break, which may be sorely needed. I was in Provence-Montpellier-Toulouse-Perpignan in June 2017 and it was miserably hot.

Galicia is way far away from Bordeaux. Do you mean the Basque Country?

Hi,
We were a week each in the Lyon, Avignon and Bordeaux areas this spring. Outside Lyon is Roanne, were we rented a Fench gite. If you are not familiar with 'Gites de France', Please do. The only difficulty with their website is knowing the departments (counties and sub-counties of France. We rented a cottage for a week, and it was 180 Euro/wk. Gites tend to rent Saturday to Saturday. At that low a price, staying 3 or 4 nights and then leaving (tell them in advance that you will be departing early so they can be there when you leave) still seems a bargain. Roanne city and area was lovely and not heavily touristed. Lyon = great food, even rural Lyon has great food.

Avignon...speaking of tourists...YIKES! By the way, I am a history fan and seeing Avignon drew me there. What a poorly spent day. Everything worth stealing was taken away from the papal palace when the popes moved back to Rome. We were there in April and I can't imagine what it would be like in July. One large traffic jam looking for or at lavender? Historic, yes. Crowded, you better believe it. I am not going back. We had a nice quiet gite here too.

And then we rented a rural gite in Pay Basque for a week. The Basque region south of Bordeaux. Lovely, beautiful, empty. The Salies-de-Bearn region is quite nice. Great food. We were well south of Bordeaux near the Spanish border. Bordeaux for 4 nights.
And Bordeaux itself is fantastic. The design genius of Paris, Haussmann, lived in Bordeaux before going to Paris. You will see where he got his ideas for a beautiful city.

You have selected three great places. If I were to redo my trip: a couple days in Paris...then go to Lyon/Roanne, Then get near the Cele River/Lot River in the Lot Department. And then move on to Basque/Bordeaux before returning to Paris for a few days. 22-26 days. Sounds wonderful. Lean towards more days and more relaxed time. At least two of those days will be traveling to and from Europe.

wayne iNWI, I want to go back...

Go and stay in the Dordogne valley for 5-7 days. Very French and wonderful place.

This will be the highlight of your trip, and it is right on your route.
