Hello. We will spend a few days in the Lyon area in mid-November. We are looking for recommendations for lodging - budget but comfortable, clean and safe with parking; either a hotel or a “gite” (privately owned property) in Lyon or suburb cities of Ecully, Caluire-et-Cuire or Francheville. Thank you.
What do you mean by budget? Can you give a price range in euros? How many people?
Hi. Two people, up to E$150/night, does not have too include breakfast but I need parking on site or on the street/nearby.
Rose,
At that price range, I would suggest checking on Booking.com and filter for your price and filter for parking. If you are not familiar with using it, the filter options are on the left side of the screen. You can often book directly with the lodging, or not, but I always start there. I put in mid-November dates and 3 nights as a sample and it said 188 options. I didn't look at more than three, and I don't know Lyon's arrondissements, but try that. If you find a few you are considering, then come back to the forum for opinions on them and their locations. Best of luck in your search!
Rose, for a gite, try the very reliable website gites-de-france. Excellent resource, but it takes a little work to search the site. You probably want a chambre d'hote (room) in a home, often with breakfast. Spending time on the gites-de-france site we have found some great places to stay, between one night and two weeks, for 2 people up to 7 people. It does take effort, though.
Thanks Judy for your suggestions!
Consider looking at the company Cocoonr. I’ve rented apartments from them inLyon and in Saint Malo and was pleased. Their offerings cover a range of prices.
We just stayed in Lyon. Hotel des artists is a lovely place with parking across the street for $117 for the room. We have also stayed at some Airbnb’s on rue de plat but parking there is not easy.
I'll add another plug for the Hotel des Artistes, where I stayed four nights a couple of years ago. It's in the heart of the city, near the river, clean and comfortable, good breakfast. I wasn't driving, but the website says there is paid public parking across the street, and Google Earth street view shows that's in an underground garage.
Whether you want to be driving in central Lyon is up to you. If your plans take you out of town much, you might want a location farther from the center. If you'll be focusing on the city, which has excellent public transportation, you could stay parked while you're there, and an underground garage would probably be the safest choice.
We stayed in 2 different hotels there. One is Hotel Celestins, nice, clean, helpful staff, good location. The other was the Hotel Mercure Gare, at the train station, next door is the related hotel, Ibis.
Two years ago we stayed at Hotel Celestins which was great. In a week we will be staying at Hotel Elysee, another RS recommendation. Our focus for both trips was to stay near Place Bellecour as it is so close to the old town sites on Presqu'ile and Vieux Lyon area. Also we will again be purchasing the Lyon CIty Card, a great value.
