Lyon or French Riviera following a Rick Steve's tour

We are hoping the experienced travelers on this forum might help with an itinerary challenge. We are booked on a May 2026 Loire to the South of France trip that starts in Chartres and ends in Nice. We will have about a week after the trip for independent travel. Our initial plan was to leave Nice right after the tour and spend two nights in Aix en Provence, three nights in Lyon, and then two nights near Paris to tour Vaux Le Vicompte and Fountainbleau. We would then return to London via the Eurostar and fly home from London.

However, we are considering scrapping that plan and simply staying in Nice and exploring the area, with a flight back to London from Nice. Our considerations are as follows: Our tour does not stop in Aix and we have never been to Lyon (we have been to Paris multiple times). On the other hand, the two nights in Nice from the tour don't seem enough to do that area justice. Should we just bite the bullet and commit to Nice and its environs for the week and flight out of Nice back to London for the connection home? We plan on returning to France many times and perhaps we should just save Lyon and the Chateaus for another trip. One thing we are concerned with is the impact of cruise ships and mass tourism in the Nice area. Any insights that might help us decide would be appreciated.

From what I'm learning, a week in Nice as a base is barely enough.
The region has much to see and enjoy.

I hope to spend a week there later this year.

We did that tour in May 2019. We only stayed in Nice for 3 days before heading home and put it on the list for a month-long stay sometime in the future. It's a terrific base for daytrips. I wouldn't be too concerned about cruiseships, however, if I remember correctly there is a long weekend in France in either the 3rd or 4th week, and the Monaco Grand Prix is around that time. Both will bring crowds and inflate prices.

Edit: next year the Grand Prix is June 5-7 but expect crowds to start arriving the week before. There are French holidays May 14th and 25th next year. I don't know how they'll impact, but I do know the last weekend in 2019 was crowded with locals.

I stayed in Nice for five nights in 2019 and left feeling like I would like to go back and explore more of the Riviera. By the way, the train & bus transportation along the Riviera are very handy to see a lot. I went as far east as Menton and loved the Italian area for some gorgeous photos of the building colors.

We have stayed in Lyon & Annecy, and I would save Lyon for a future trip since it’s an easy train ride from Paris.

The French Riviera is a nice contrast with the rest of your trip.

I have to second the motion on Nice as well. My RS your was 2019 and I always thought I didn't spend enough time there. My hotel room overlooked the water and I enjoyed watching the paragliders. I enjoyed Lyon but I always end up being near the water if given the opportunity.

I would stay in Nice. We left right after the tour and regretted it. We did see the Marc Chagall Museum but didn’t have time for the Matisse Museum, Monte Carlo or Eze and heard from tour mates how easy the bus was to get to places…next time.
