I'd recommend Lyon as long as you plan on spending a little time; that is, more than just half a day. It's a very large, beautiful city (3rd largest in France), and there's plenty to see and do. I wasn't overly impressed with Dijon, but then again, I was there on a day most things were closed. But if you're just talking about a day trip, Dijon would be much more manageable.
I agree with Robert's logic. What I enjoyed on a one-day visit to Dijon were a self-guided walking tour in the old town (see the tourist office web site or visit them in person) and the (free) Musee des Beaux Arts.
I strongly preferred Lyon (my favorite city in France after Paris, with several days of varied attractions) to Dijon (which I found a bit of a snooze). But many people do enjoy Dijon too.
Lyon, if you can swing it logistically.
I think that Lyon would be a much better choice. Dijon has a good self-guided tour, but I don't remember much else there. Lyon is a marvelous city with lots to see and do. We just spent a full week there and enjoyed it thoroughly.
We spent a day in Dijon, doing what Laura did, and it was fine. I haven't been to Lyon but I know there's a lot more to see and do there. Not knowing your timeframe, it's hard to say. If you have just a day, Dijon might be more manageable. But if you have several days, I'd go for Lyon.
But you're not making this choice in a vacuum. Where will you be before and after this city-to-be-chosen? Logistics might inform your choice and others' recommendations.
The food is really good in Lyon...just sayin'!
without question, you must see Lyon. The sights are great and the food is outstanding
