Hello most helpful people!
My husband and I are traveling with another couple in late Sept to the south of France. We will be flying into Geneva and then taking the train to Lyon for 2 days.
(We travel exclusively by rail when in Europe) we will then travel south to the Provence area. My questions are where is a good place to base out of and is traveling by rail in this area a good idea.
We’d like to explore the local areas, castles, churches, quaint places and good food.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Avignon is probably the best base for train use. There are smaller towns in Provence where trains do not go. Places such as Arles, Nimes. Aix-en-Provence and Orange can be reached by train. You may want to rent a car in Avignon for other out of the way places to visit.
I agree that Avignon is a good base for Provence. It is on the train line, and smaller towns can be reached by rental car, ride share, or even small tour groups. (There is a tourism office in the city center in Avignon where you can easily arrange excursions.)
I am a dedicated train traveler in Europe as well - I've never rented a car there, and never had any problem getting where I needed to go. In the case of small towns off the grid, hiring a private transfer or taking an organized tour fills the gap.
Thank you both very much!
