We are seeking a cheaper alternative to making the trip to/from Lyon Saint-Exupery TGV Airport Station into the center of Lyon rather than the very expensive Rhone Express Tram. Any suggestions? Thank you.

I believe you may be the first person I've seen referring to the Rhônexpress service as "very expensive" (emphasis mine).
It's not free, of course, but it's reliable and isn't impeded by traffic.
What would you consider a reasonable cost for transport from the airport into town? Is the Rhônexpress fee a substantial fraction of your overall travel budget? If so, congratulations on your excellent economizing!
How many are in your party? Would a taxi be cheaper for you? I'm sure you could contact local taxi services to get their estimates, which would, of course, be subject to the famous Lyon traffic jams.

yeah, I'm a cheapest way from the airport kind of traveler who took it and do not remember feeling like it was an exorbitant price
