We are considering a river cruise that ends in Remich and then taking several days to drive from there to Paris. We plan on stopping in and around Verdun for WW1 sites. Any suggestions for places to see and stay along the way are appreciated. Thank you.

Are you aware of the surcharges that apply if you rent a car in one country (Luxembourg) and try to return it in another (France)?
Or are you planning to return with the car to Luxembourg?
My suggestion would be the Champagne area. The main city, Reims, has a lovely cathedral. But, with a car, I would visit the small wine towns (for example Épernay) and villages. Lots of vineyards to visit.

To avoid heavy cross-border car hire charges, you might want to get the train from Luxembourg to Metz, the nearest big city in France, and hire the car there.

Thank you. I had thought of alternatives to picking up a car, just not certain what city would be most convenient.
